The Legislative Yuan has approved the nomination of Lee Hung-chun to the post of Control Yuan vice president. The former lawmaker was approved in a vote of 99-2, with broad support across party lines. The Control Yuan post has been vacant since 2020, when the nomination of Justin Huang met widespread opposition. Lee says he will quit his party, the People’s First Party, before he takes his new office.
Earlier this month, President Tsai Ing-wen nominated former People First Party lawmaker Lee Hung-chun for Control Yuan vice president. On Tuesday, the nomination was approved by the legislature with a bipartisan consensus.
Stacey Lee
KMT lawmaker
So far, the Control Yuan has been as green as can be. I think that having a responsible and professional person in the Control Yuan is a good thing overall for our country.
Cheng Peng-yun
DPP lawmaker
Every time that the Legislative Yuan has to approve a candidate, the DPP puts up a top-tier mobilization effort and votes unanimously. There have been no exceptions. Today, we saw that, after their caucus meeting, many KMT lawmakers came to the Legislative Yuan to cast a vote. It seems that most in the KMT also support this candidate for Control Yuan vice president. I hope that, once the votes are counted, Lee Hung-chun will be approved for the post.
Andy Chiu
Taiwan People’s Party
We approve of the nominee’s background and his past contributions. We hope that he can transcend party lines and exercise his supervisory role independently. We do not want the Control Yuan to continue being like the Ming dynasty’s Eastern Depot, an agency that suppresses political opposition for the DPP.
Lee’s only opposition came from the New Power Party.
Chiu Hsien-chih
New Power Party lawmaker
The New Power Party will vote against. We had asked the nominee for his views on various controversial human rights issues in Taiwan, such as the abolition of the death penalty or the adoption rights of same-sex couples. We asked him about his positions. He said that so long as there is no social consensus on these issues, he would not be able to comment. That response left us deeply disappointed.
The post of Control Yuan vice president has been vacant for two years. In the end, the Legislative Yuan approved Lee’s nomination in a vote of 99-2, with one invalid ballot cast. Lee says he will quit the People’s First Party in order to maintain neutrality in the Control Yuan’s leadership.?
