The weather Sunday was still on the hot side. With gravity-driven winds coming in from the southwest, Northern and Eastern Taiwan saw the mercury hit 36 degrees. However, the weather will begin to change starting tomorrow. A stationary front will bring precipitation island-wide, with the central and southern regions getting the lion''s share. The Central Weather Bureau has already issued torrential rain warnings in six counties and cities.

With the scorching sun hanging overhead, the weather was hot and stuffy on Sunday. This was largely the effect of katabatic winds coming in from the southwest. Northern and eastern regions experienced high temperatures with sporadic brief thunder showers.

Things will start to change on Monday when a weather front approaches. Meteorology expert Peng Chi-ming reminded the public on social media that a stationary front will arrive on Tuesday, with heavy rains occurring Tuesday and Wednesday. The places that were flooded in the wake of the previous two fronts should be prepared for a repeat. Rain accumulation could reach as high as 200 to 300 millimeters, similar to the amounts left by the last two fronts.

In the period between Tuesday and Thursday, the weather front will be above Taiwan, so the weather on the entire island will be unstable. The western half of the island especially will be affected by short spurts of heavy rainfall. Its intensity could reach that of torrential rain.

Torrential rain alert had been issued for Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Chiayi City, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County. The rain is not expected to relent until Friday. As the drought-affected reservoirs in central and southern Taiwan get their much needed fill, the public is reminded to carry an umbrella when heading out.
