Have you enjoyed a Mid-Autumn barbecue yet? If so, you’re in great company, with the animals at Shoushan Zoo. The Kaohsiung zoo had designed special meals for their animals this festive season, ranging from colorful skewers for the herbivores, assorted meats for the lions, and pomelos for the macaques. Let’s take a look.

A pair of western mountain coatis stood on their hind legs and swiped at the colorful fruit-and-vegetable skewers hanging from a rack. Yum!

The crested porcupines were served a similar feast, but they couldn’t quite reach it. They tore it down from the rack instead.

Meanwhile, an African lion had assorted meats all to himself. Unable to contain his excitement, he dismembered the rack and went to town.

For the African lions, we made a special feast of assorted meats with whole ducks, chicken breasts and pork liver. For other animals like the western mountain coatis, the crested porcupines and the long-tailed macaques, we made them colorful skewers with seasonal fruits and vegetables.

The Shoushan Zoo in Kaohsiung believes animals should also enjoy the festive season. So they designed Mid-Autumn specials catered to every species. The monkeys, which are most closely related to humans, had pomelos, too.

To make things fun for the animals, we’ve used the zoo’s cutoff branches to make special racks for them to eat from. We used jute rope and twigs as skewers and hang them from the wooden rack. This makes it more challenging for them and allows them to move in different ways.

The thoughtfulness of zookeepers and animal nutritionists gave the zoo’s residents a very happy Mid-Autumn Festival.
