A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck early Sunday morning at 6:21. The quake''s epicenter was in Hualien''s Xiulin Township with a depth of 45 kilometers, which is considered shallow by earthquake standards. It was the area''s largest quake in 48 years.

While Hualien County experienced the strongest shaking, Yilan and Hsinchu counties also recorded magnitude 4. Taipei, New Taipei, Taichung City, Nantou County, Taoyuan City and Miaoli County all recorded magnitude 3. The Central Weather Bureau said this quake occurred in a subduction zone and that three or four aftershocks may occur in the next day or two.
