An Australian athlete has triumphed at a sporting tournament for older people. A new record for 100 meters was set at the National Masters Athletics International Tournament by Laurence James Quinlivan. The Australian athlete has a strong family connection with Taiwan. His grand-daughter, actress Hannah Quinlivan, lives and works here, and is married to superstar Jay Chou. The singer celebrated his grandpa-in-law on social media.

“If you’re still going, I can’t give up.” Jay Chou posted the video with his own song on social media, boasting about his grandpa-in-law’s great results at the National Masters Athletics International Tournament.

He broke the 100 meters record with 20.53 seconds. He also won bronze for shotput.

Hannah Quinlivan’s father and grandfather are both strong athletes. As a young man, Laurence Quinlivan was high school shot-put champion for Australia.

He was an athlete in his youth. So I said, “You must compete!” a few days later, he told me, “I can do better in 100 meters than the last people.” He grew in confidence.

To secure his victory, Laurence Quinlivan flew to Taiwan to train specially. His next goal is the 2025 World Masters Games.
