A manhole cover explosion left a big crack on a busy road in New Taipei at noon on Tuesday. The resulting crater measured almost 2m and caused traffic disruptions on Xianmin Boulevard in Banqiao.

The explosion was caught on camera, and shows the road suddenly bursting apart with a loud bang, sending dust and pieces of rubble flying. Even the manhole cover, which weights 300kg was lifted off and sent to the side. Fortunately, the explosion occurred during a red light, and nobody was in the immediate vicinity. The exact cause of the incident is unknown, but it is thought that it was caused by termites. The termites may have caused a short circuit in underground power lines, which.
