Sea turtles caught in fishing nets is a common sight. But one recent incident near Keelung’s Badouzi Fishing Harbor came as a surprise: It was an eagle that was found ensnared. Spotted bobbing on the surface of the ocean, nearly drowned, a bystander quickly alerted animal control for help. A coordinated effort brought the eagle to shore, where rescuers found its beak and body bound by a fishing line. After a swift extraction, the bird was taken in for an examination to confirm it didn’t sustain any fractures or injuries.

Animal control careful approaches an eagle standing on tetrapods. Using a net, they swiftly catch it and bring it ashore.

The bird was unable to move, as its beak and wings were entangled by fishing line. They quickly used a utility knife to cut it free.

- It’s fishing line, not a net.
It got caught in line used for fishing.
We need to bring this back for analysis.

Someone noticed the nearly drowned eagle bobbing on the surface of the water near Badouzi Wanghaixiang Fishing Harbor in Keelung and quickly reported it. A city official asked a diving instructor to help coordinate the rescue.

Voice of Wang Ming-hsiang
Diving instructor
I’ve seen it all now. Saving sea turtles is one thing, but an eagle?

The two-year-old protected black kite likely became entangled in the line when diving into the ocean to catch fish. After being brought back for an examination, no fractures or injuries were discovered, although it was still weak and required support. It is currently under the care of the Caoshan Raptor Center and will be released back into the wild after recovering.
