Though Taiwan and Somaliland do not maintain formal diplomatic relations, the two countries established representative offices in each other’s territories in 2020. The close exchanges make Somaliland one of Taiwan’s most important democratic partners in East Africa.Somaliland’s de facto ambassador said the new office location will help facilitate closer diplomatic and professional exchanges. He noted that the deepening relationship between Somaliland and Taiwan reflects the high level of trust and cooperation shared by both sides, built upon common values including respect, democracy, freedom, and the rule of law.
