The student, surnamed Lee, had tried to save an elderly man that had fallen into the water in the early hours of Tuesday. Lee’s lifeless body was found on Thursday near the site where he jumped into the water. Let’s hear more.Huang Kuo-chengFTV reporterAfter two days of searches, Mr. Lee’s body was found 30m upstream from the footbridge at Dadaocheng Wharf, about 10m from the riverbank.Hsu Che-chihPolice officerOur precinct contacted the family and asked them to come to the station to provide a statement and confirm the identity of the body. He was very kind-hearted. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have done this. We support and respect the decision my brother made, and we’re sad that the elderly man couldn’t be saved.Mr. Lee was 24-years-old and reportedly a capable swimmer who had immediately responded to try and rescue the elderly man. His death has left his friends and family devastated, and also is serving as a stark reminder of the dangers of water rescues. Fire fighters say that knowing how to swim does not equate to knowing how to perform a rescue. Rescuers have to contend with the weight of the victim, their pulling force and the drag in the water. That’s on top of enduring the panic and struggle of a person who’s drowning. Even the most experienced swimmers can get worn out fast in a matter of minutes. For more Taiwan news, tune in:Mon to Fri at 9:30 pm on Channel 152Tue to Sat at 1 am on Channel 53#tamsui #taipei #river #rescue #student #news#台灣新聞 #TaiwanNews #民視新聞 #FTV新聞 #Taiwan
