A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake devastated Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday afternoon, killing at least 13 people, toppling buildings, and triggering fires across the region. The tremor hit a maximum intensity of 7 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale. One of the deadliest places was the AEON mall, which was rocked by a gas explosion an hour after the main shock. Three people lost their lives, and three remain unaccounted for at the shopping center.

FTV reporters headed to the disaster area, where they recorded these images of the destruction one day later. The exterior walks have been blown off, and parts of the structural frame have collapsed. What remains inside the mall is mostly debris. The head of AEON says the mall had completed its evacuation procedures before the explosion happened. He says it is unknown why there were people still in the building at the time, but what is known is that they were all employees.
