The Penglai Creek Fish Watching Trail in Miaoli’s Nanzhuang Township has long been a favorite summer retreat and a must-visit attraction for tourists. But after Typhoon Bavi devastated the township, nearly the entire trail was destroyed. Back in 2013, Typhoon Soulik also caused extensive damage to the trail, taking two years of renovation before reopening. Following a site inspection by the central government, officials promised to assist in repairing it as quickly as possible to restore its original beauty.

Built along Penglai Creek, this fish-watching trail has always been a top summer getaway for tourists visiting Nanzhuang, boasting a rich aquatic ecosystem. Unfortunately, it suffered heavy damage from Typhoon Bavi earlier this year. Beyond eroded foundations, the wooden boardwalks running along the creek were also crushed by collapsing rocks and soil.

- The entire road is gone.

- The trail is great, really nice.
- And walking under the shade of the trees is so comfortable.

Only after arriving did these visitors realize that the Penglai Creek Fish Watching Trail had been destroyed by the typhoon and temporarily closed. Nearby business owners feel the impact even more deeply, as very few people visit on weekends now.

- How is to now compared to when the trail was open?
- There’s a huge difference. All of the customers now are regulars.

- There are fewer tourists.
- By how much?
- Basically none. Have you seen the parking lot?
- There’s no one.

The Penglai Creek trail originated from a fish conservation campaign launched by residents in 2001, making it Miaoli County’s first successful stream transformation into a natural ecological park. The trail stretches about 1.6km, and is flat and easy to walk. Recently, central government ministries, the county government, and other related agencies inspected the site, which requires a massive restoration effort.

The fish-watching trail is a must-visit attraction for many tourists coming to Nanzhuang. Now that there is one less spot to sightsee and stroll around, it will naturally impact the tourism business.

Following the site survey, the central government promised to assist with repairs as quickly as possible to recreate the original charm of the Penglai Creek trail.
