Last year, many visitors to Kaohsiung fell in love with two massive rubber ducks on display on the Love River. Though the ducks are long gone, their spirit remains alive in the form of bright yellow tote bags. The city government had the canvas from the inflatables turned into eco-friendly totes, 300 of which will be handed out for free on Friday at the Kaohsiung Wonderland.

A bright yellow canvas tote. Its stylish and eye-catching design has made it a much sought-after accessory. But this is not your run-of-the-mill bag. It’s actually made from the Rubber Duck inflatables that commanded Kaohsiung’s Love River last year.

Discarding the ducks after the exhibition wouldn’t have been very eco-friendly. But by turning the canvas into bags, the material is recycled into items people can use.

It’s quite good that the material was reused.

The two Rubber Ducks have become a fond memory for many who saw them floating on the Love River. Now, the cute inflatables have a new life, thanks to a project to reuse the materials by Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau. The canvas was collected and cut using specialized machinery to produce hundreds of totes.

We want to be in line with sustainable development goals. This kind of innovative mindset can even give a new life to large inflatables. You collect the materials and use them again. That’s what the circular economy is about.

Three hundred bags will be handed out for free on Friday at the Kaohsiung Wonderland to people who complete a number of missions there. And sticker sets can be collected as well. So if you are a fan of the duckies, get ready to snap up the goodies.
