An investigation has confirmed that Central Union Oil did not immediately inform the authorities about their problematic products, and that it had not been entirely forthcoming. As a result, the Ministry of Health and Welfare fined the oil company. At over NT$165 million, the fine is the largest the central government has ever given.Local governments have also gotten involved. Central Union Oil received a NT$3 million fine from Taichung’s Health Bureau, which also gave both Fwusow and Fopco a separate NT$3 million fine for not revealing test results. Changhua’s Public Health Bureau is seeking NT$6 million from Taisun. Even Namchow Group, which tested the oil on its own behalf, is being punished for only informing companies in the upstream supply chain. Taipei’s Department of Health fined the company NT$3 million for not reporting the issue in accordance with the law.
