Taiwan was under martial law for 38 years, the longest stretch of martial law in history. But the period of authoritarian brutality known as the “White Terror” lasted even longer, 43 years.
How many victims of the White Terror were there? If we include people reported, spied on, or tortured, it’s not clear. Many records were destroyed or kept classified. We know there were at least 140,000 victims. They came from all walks of life, including ordinary professions like pharmacists and schoolteachers. Why were ordinary people embroiled in the White Terror?
Today on Taiwan History, we meet eyewitnesses and family members to learn more about this dark chapter of Taiwan’s history.
