Taiwan chipmaker TSMC has pledged a donation of 250 million yen, or NT$50.05 million, to support disaster relief in Japan. Last week’s 7.1 earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture caused destruction in many areas, including Yatsushiro City. TSMC, which operates a fab in Kumamoto, says it will also launch a fundraiser among employees to help locals.

I’m really proud of Taiwan. In Japan, large corporations rarely make donations this big. Softbank donated 100 million yen, and TSMC is donating 250 million. That’s the largest corporate donation we’ve seen for this quake.

TSMC also made a donation equivalent to 20% of its employee’s salaries for September back during the 1999 Jiji earthquake. This spirit of helping others is truly admirable.

TSMC announced the donation on its official Japanese account on X, saying the funds will support recovery and rebuilding efforts. The announcement sparked an outpouring of gratitude from Japanese users online. Many thanked TSMC for investing in Kumamoto, and standing by the local community when it needs it most. The company is also encouraging employees to contribute through the TSMC Charity Foundation.
