The modern motion picture industry has been dominated by the U.S. and Europe. Taiwan’s film industry has developed more slowly. In that context, the director Ang Lee, who successfully broke into Hollywood and whose films have been heavily garlanded, is truly “the Pride of Taiwan.”

Lee is known for his gentle and elegant demeanor. To examine his life, we will visit his star-studded movies and the ups and downs of his career. We’ll look at Lee’s life before success. Many are fascinated by Lee’s early years: his time spent as a househusband, as well as his experience of failing college entrance exams, twice.

But few consider his patchwork upbringing, his childhood spent moving between Pingtung, Hualien and Tainan, and his education in a middle class family, which laid the foundations for his sensitive work. Today, Lee’s grades would get him into a top college. On today’s episode of Taiwan History, we meet Ang Lee, one of Taiwan’s great artists, and tell his story from the very beginning.
