A footwear thief in Kaohsiung has been busted with more than 300 pairs of women’s shoes at home. The local police launched an investigation after constant reports of shoes disappearing in the neighborhood. He was ultimately caught on camera, and officials called up to his house to find an unbelievable mountain of footwear. Now, all the shoes, sandals and slippers have been brought out to the local borough warden’s office, so that victims can reclaim their belongings. Let’s hear more.

Tsai Shun-feng
Wengyuan Borough Warden
I didn’t know he had this obsession. When we took him to the police, the victims went to his house to collect their shoes. Some of them got them back, others didn’t. He had more than 300 pairs on the third floor.

Ms. Chen
Footwear thievery victim
We got two pairs stolen. At first we thought the dog moved them away. We bought new ones, but within three days they got stolen again. I don’t know what his motive for stealing the shoes might be. But the CCTV footage shows him squatting to catch a whiff first.

Ho Chi-hsun
Police officer
No charges have been filed yet, but it would be considered theft under criminal law. We will investigate and forward the case to the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office.

The thief had been on the prowl for more than six months. And he was quite picky about his shoes, preferring women’s footwear such as slippers and sandals. Even if the victims don’t sue, the man will be investigated for criminal offences. For now, the massive pile of shoes sits at the local borough warden’s office, so that victims can recover their stolen shoes.
