Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim is about to go on her first official state visit this weekend. She’ll be going to Palau, one of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, for five days. During her stay in the island nation, she’ll meet with President Surangel Whipps Jr. and other high ranking government officials, and engage with the Palau National Congress and its lawmakers. President Lai Ching-te has set three key goals for Hsiao: deepening diplomatic ties, assisting Palau in promoting sustainable tourism, and witnessing the achievements of Taiwan-Palau cooperation through the Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project.

Taiwan and Palau share deep diplomatic ties, as can be seen from the fact that Lai’s first overseas visit after assuming office in 2024 was to Palau. Earlier this year, China pressured three nations to block a planned trip to Eswatini by Lai Ching-te. At the presser on Monday, reporters asked the Presidential Office spokesperson about whether the government had assessed the risks of such a trip to prevent a repeat. Spokesperson Karen Kuo said they had a complete grasp of the situation.
