Starting on Wednesday, Penghu’s two-month sea urchin harvest season begins. Harvesting short-spined sea urchin, also known as bafun uni, outside of the months of July and August is illegal. On the first day of the harvest season, shoppers flocked to the wet markets for this covetable delicacy. Sold individually, each urchin would set you back at least NT$150. The bigger it is, the more expensive. Some larger specimens could cost up to NT$600 apiece. Due to climate change, the harvest is considerably smaller than past years.
