Finding the time to care for ourselves amid our bustling lives can be a challenge. For Chiayi County Commissioner Weng Chang-liang, brisk walks and tea breaks are the best ways to stay healthy and happy. In the evening, Weng walks around the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum and back to the commissioner’s residence, a distance of about 5km. He also started regularly drinking tea after returning to Chiayi, the source of the famous Alishan tea.

The scenery is so beautiful here, and it’s actually very good exercise. Walking around the grounds is about 3km, and then walking back to the residence makes it 5km. It takes 45 to 50 minutes every day.

As head of the local government, Weng is very busy and struggles to find the time to exercise. But to maintain his physical health, he sets a few rules for himself.

One rule is that every day after 8 p.m. if I have the time, I’ll go for a walk. Sometimes I do this four times a week, but if I’m very busy I don’t manage it at all.

Prioritizing his health, he enjoys drinking tea in addition to walking.

This type of oolong tea, Jinxuan, should be steeped for about one minute and then you can pour it out to drink.

Chiayi’s Alishan is Taiwan’s biggest producer of high mountain tea. Nearly every household has a tea table, and Weng picked up the practice when he returned to his hometown.

When I came back to Chiayi, I found that every household has a tea table and everyone brews tea. Serving tea to guests is a cultural norm in Chiayi, so I also started drinking it too.

Weng has become a tea connoisseur, precise in his choice of water, amount of tea leaves, and brewing time. He is the best spokesperson for Alishan tea.

Chiayi’s tea still maintains a crucial characteristic: It is handpicked using the “one bud, two leaves” method.

In the face of countless official duties, Weng has found his own way to stay happy and healthy.
