On Wednesday, Taiwan-born voice actor Shi Banyu, whose real name is Shi Renmao, passed away aged 66 due to a sudden cardiac arrest. For 30 years, as the Mandarin voice for Hong Kong star Stephen Chow’s characters, Shi has delighted many movie fans in the Sinosphere. He lived a life fit for a movie. Let’s take a look.

The famous voice belongs to none other than Shi Banyu, Hong Kong comedy star Stephen Chow’s Mandarin voice actor. On Sept. 18, Shi’s family revealed that he passed away at the age of 66, due to a sudden cardiac arrest. On Instagram, Stephen Chow posted a story in memory of his Mandarin voice.
Shi has dubbed Chow’s characters across 30 films, beginning with “All for the Winners” in 1991. His performance was immediately a hit among moviegoers, and since then he became the Chow’s long-term Mandarin voice. Amid the global financial crisis in 2009, as Shi began supplementing his income as a licensed tour guide, he didn’t know his life would undergo dramatic and cinematic changes.
