National defense has once again become a hot topic in Taiwan, as cross-party negotiations over a special defense budget have still yet to yield any results. Earlier this week, a group of US senators sent a letter to the Legislative Yuan urging lawmakers to come together expeditiously and pass the budget. More recently, former US Navy Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery said that if Taiwan doesn’t get its act together quick, it could become a bargaining chip in a potential meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

President Lai Ching-te on Friday headed south to Kaohsiung to inspect the Air Force’s survival training center for air crew, and the Army’s infantry training command. During the inspections, he reiterated that Taiwan’s defense is not be watered down, while calling for the passing of the special defense budget as quickly as possible.
