FTV News also exclusively interviewed Chen, who reassured the public that he is recovering and promised he will meet everyone again soon. Let’s hear from him.

Voice of Chen Liang-gee
Former Minister of Science and Technology
Sorry for alarming everyone. When I saw the news myself, I felt a bit embarrassed. The hospital still hasn’t figured out the exact cause. The diagnosis points to an atypical infection, so we still don’t know. The samples were sent to the CDC, but all of the test results there came back negative, so at this point nothing can be confirmed.

When the brain suffers major acute trauma like this, how much recovery is possible often depends greatly on the patient’s physical condition beforehand.

The unknown cause of the illness terrified Chen’s family. Chen wrote that after he was admitted to the ICU, family members had to sign consent forms for brain scans because his nervous system had also been attacked, triggering severe epileptic seizures and serious multiple organ failure. His body was covered in tubes and medical equipment. Fortunately, he is now gradually recovering. Using a walker, Chen has already been able to take short walks along mountain trails near his neighborhood over the past two days.
