The bioluminescent algae at Matsu, known locally as “Blue Tears” are a natural spectacle that light up the sea in blue tones at night. But did you know that there is a similar land-based phenomenon in the mountains of Taiwan? Over in Miaoli’s Sanyi Township, Asiatic pennywort plants appear to emit a blue light at night, which pairs magically with the yellow-green glow of hundreds of fireflies in the area. It’s truly a breathtaking sight. Let’s hear more.

Resort park assistant manager
A recent rainstorm helped create the most spectacular firefly display in recent years. It felt like you were looking straight at the Milky Way on the ground. It was magnificent. We think this peak firefly viewing period will last until early May, including Mother’s Day.

And the beauty of Sanyi isn’t limited to the stunning nightscape. During the day, the hills in the area appear to be covered in snow, as the tung blossoms are in full bloom. So if you want to catch this spring snow during the day and mesmerizing light displays at night, you better make the trip to Miaoli before the season ends.
