A bizarre spectacle appeared in Nantou’s Puli township recently. A massive cloud of bees suddenly swarmed along Zhonghua Road, buzzing loudly. Shopkeepers quickly closed their doors and windows, and pedestrians ran, trying to get away from the insects. The swarm finally left after about half an hour.

It was a huge swarm of bees. Passersby were quite frightened, but also found it funny, so they snapped pictures because it was the first time for them to see something like this on the street.

At first I thought they were mosquitoes or something, but then I saw they were bees. There was a huge swarm of them around the traffic lights and the intersection, probably about a thousand of them.

A new queen bee has emerged, so the old queen bee will lead some worker bees to find the next suitable location to build a hive.
Experts point out that this is a natural phenomenon. When a hive becomes overcrowded, the old queen takes half of the worker bees to scout out a new location, leaving the original hive to a new queen. While swarming is a natural part of bee reproduction, seeing it happen in the bustling downtown area of Puli is rare, giving the townsfolk quite a scare.
