Everyone living in Taiwan experiences earthquakes. Some are too small to notice, while others bring buildings to the ground. On average, there are more than 26,000 earthquakes every year on this “island where the earth moves.”

The 1999 Jiji Earthquake is notorious, but it was not the deadliest quake in Taiwan’s history. Records go back 200 to 300 years, and tell us about historical quakes, such as the one in Taichung in 1935, which caused 3,200 deaths.

Today on Taiwan History, we uncover the story of earthquakes in the country, a story that weaves history together with geography.
