Taipei City is rethinking its bus safety features, following concerns about the placement of “break points.” Break points are labels placed on bus windows, to show passengers where to smash the glass for emergency escape. According to experts, these points are often misplaced on Taipei’s buses.

Chang Hua-chen
Taipei Public Transportation Office director
We want to achieve consistency. We will bring together bus operators and technical experts to determine the most effective locations for these break points. We want to standardize the markings across all buses.

Chang Chen-huan
Bus company representative
The smaller the area of contact, the greater the pressure exerted. That’s why we use sharp hammers, which should be used to strike the four corners of a window.

Experts say that to smash a window, it’s more effective to use repeated strikes on the same spot, rather than to create multiple cracks on the same pane. Many bus operators are also adopting push-out windows to enhance passenger safety.
