A taekwondo coach regularly comes from a neighboring community to teach the 23 seniors at a care center in Changhua’s Shengang Township. He tailored a special program for these students aged between 70 and 95, emphasizing safer, simpler moves that are easy to learn.

Looking sharp in their uniforms, this class of seniors keeps to their coach’s rhythm while throwing punches. Those who have trouble standing join in while sitting off to the side.

The care center here in Changhua’s Shengang Township cares for 23 seniors ranging in age from 70 to 95. To keep them active, a taekwondo coach from a nearby community designed a specialized course that he holds regularly at the center.

I noticed that they may be losing muscle and are lacking exercise. Since 70% of taekwondo involves footwork, I opened a class here mostly centered on warm-ups and stretching.

The coach wants to emphasize that taekwondo isn’t exclusive to young people. By tailoring safe and simple moves to each student’s ability, everyone can join in without worry. The center also ordered custom uniforms thanks to a donation from a foundation.

Care center director
At first, we just wanted them to try it out. But after one or two sessions, they started really looking forward to the coach coming by. Putting on the uniforms feels right and gives it a sense of ceremony. It makes the class even more fun.

Besides boosting awareness of self-defense, the class also gets seniors moving and gives them something new to master.
