Freedom of expression is once again at the center of growing cross-strait tensions. Taiwan’s independent booksellers and pro-democracy lawmakers on Monday rallied behind a bookstore employee who was arrested by police last week in Hong Kong. Lawmakers and bookstore owners say the case is about more than just one arrest, arguing argue it reflects Beijing’s broader efforts to silence free expression. Among the participants were DPP lawmakers Wu Pei-yi and Chen Pei-yu, who joined the event to show their support.

In effect, China is burning books. We just didn’t think that China would go as far as banning books and suppressing the freedom of bookstores regarding what books they choose, display and sell. As lawmakers from the ROC’s Legislative Yuan, we must condemn the Chinese government on behalf of Taiwan. It’s also a time to remind everyone that since China has passed its “ethnic unity” law, this kind of “red terror” could spread to other free countries.

Lawmaker (DPP)
We’ve all seen many people in the KMT and TPP collaborating with China. They don’t proclaim it out loud, but by pushing for budget cuts and complying with the CCP, they are suppressing all sorts of possibilities in Taiwan. If we don’t stand up today, if we stay quiet because we are not the victims this time, we will be the victims one day.

The lawmakers co condemned what they described as Beijing’s suppression of even the freedom to choose and sell books. They also accused Taiwan’s opposition parties of working in step with China, through passing budget cuts to cultural ends. They urged the public to support the government and Taiwan’s cultural workers to help safeguard the Taiwan’s democratic freedoms.
