In the 19th century, many Western missionaries came to Taiwan to preach through medical care. That was the dawn of Western medicine in Taiwan.

After WWII, both Protestants and Catholics set up Western hospitals in remote rural areas: the Catholic Mennonite Christian Hospital in Hualien, and St. Mary’s Hospital, Luodong, among others. They made a huge difference to rural health services. It’s an important page in Taiwan’s medical history.
