Since the 2010s, one of the brightest political stars of the nativist camp has been Lai Ching-te.

Hailing from a poor mining family, Lai lost his father at a young age and was raised solely by his mother. He devoted himself to his studies, made his way into medical school, and became a doctor to help others. But after several years, he decided to change course. He was elected to the Legislative Yuan and served four terms before completing two terms as mayor of Tainan.
After that, he served as premier and made a bid for the presidency in 2019.

Lai’s transformation has been the stuff of legend. Since entering politics, his star has only risen higher, as have his approval ratings. We bring you Lai’s story on this episode of Taiwan History.
