In Taiwan, the obesity rate has soared past 50%. Recently a 30-year-old woman called Yuki underwent bariatric surgery at MacKay Memorial Hospital. She lost a whopping 31 kg and her fertility improved. Previously it had been hard for her to conceive but nine months after the surgery, she became pregnant. Let’s join Yuki on her wellness journey.

It’s hard to imagine that tall, slender Yuki once weighed 85 kg. Compared with her old pants, her waist is more than 10 cm smaller, and even her tops hang loosely.

As for my food intake, at my peak, I could eat up to 50 dumplings in one meal from chain restaurants. Now, I’d probably eat around five per meal, a tenfold decrease.

After having 75% of her stomach removed, Yuki successfully lost 31 kg. Even ovulation problems caused by her polycystic ovary syndrome gradually improved, allowing her to conceive nine months after surgery, despite previous difficulties getting pregnant.

The main factor is polycystic ovary syndrome. Obesity leads to fat accumulation, which increases insulin resistance. Elevated insulin resistance can raise androgen levels, potentially impairing ovarian ovulation. When ovulation becomes irregular, it can easily result in infertility.

Doctors recommend bariatric surgery for individuals with a BMI over 32.5 who also have diabetes and hypertension. However, a doctor’s evaluation is necessary before surgery to determine if a patient is suitable. Post-surgery, patients should eat smaller, more frequent meals, avoid overeating, and regularly return to the doctor for checkups to monitor nutrient absorption.
