A scary accident at a construction site in Taipei was caught on camera on Monday. The incident happened next to Dongmen Market, at a residential building that was getting its façade renovated. A crane was hoisting pieces of scaffolding up to higher floors, when several of the metal plates slipped out and came crashing down on the street. One of them injured a scooter driver, who was parking on the side of the road.

I heard a loud crash and rushed out to check what happened. I saw the person who was parking a scooter had gotten a leg injury, something like a scratch. They’ve been lifting materials since construction started on March 16. They’ve lifted things several times.

Something got caught while the scaffolding pieces were getting lifted, causing the metal plates to fall. The injury was minor, just a scratch near the foot. We reached a settlement.

It was lucky that the incident happened on Monday, which is when Dongmen Market closes, and so there was barely anyone on the street. The construction company has promised to enhance its safety measures and conduct an internal review to prevent any repeats in the future. The Taipei City Construction Management Office has issued the company a fine of NT$90,000.
