The local elections are just around the corner, but do you know all the candidates up for election? In Taipei, the KMT’s Chiang Wan-an and the DPP’s Puma Shen get all the press. But there are another four candidates running for mayor. They each paid the deposit of NT$1.2 million to participate, but they only will be getting it back of they manage to get at least 10% of the vote. As reference, 2.02 million people voted in the previous election, which means the threshold then was 202,000 votes.

The four candidates attended the ballot number lottery on Tuesday. One of them is Tang Hsin-min, who showed up with a big self-made laminated poster covered in word art. His constantly chanted he was doing it “At the orders of Chiang Ching-kuo,” the former leader of Taiwan. The situation devolved into chaos after he took too long at the stand and even told staff to “shut up” when they tried to coax him away. Witnessing the awkward scene was fellow candidate Kuo Hsi, a retired Navy Captain. He took his moment to slam TVBS and SETN, the TV outlets that will be hosting mayoral debate. He said that it was “preferential treatment” and “discriminatory” that only two of the candidates were to take part. The other two candidates are former body builder Lin Chih-cheng and Hsiao Wen-chien, who worked as an interpreter for former President Chen Shui-bian.
