Taiwan’s domestically built submarine, the Hai Kun has been undergoing tests out at sea these past few weeks. Already, the sub has carried out four shallow-water dive tests off the coasts of Kaohsiung. And now, footage from the dives has been made public for the first time. Let’s find out more.

They conducted mast tests at periscope depth. They included tests involving the search periscope, the attack periscope, the communications mast and the snorkel.

Su Tzu-yun
Institute for National Defense and Security Research
The torpedo decoys are launched from both forward sides. There was a country in Europe that had agreed to sell us torpedo decoys. But they later backed out. In the end the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology had to develop the technology independently. The launch test was a success.

Wang Ting-yu
Lawmaker (DPP)
All tests have been carried out successfully and all targets have been met. We are confident that further tests will be completed step by step so that the sub can be delivered to the Navy, to enhance our real combat capabilities.

The footage shows the sub sailing with stability at periscope depth, as well as the moment that the decoy torpedoes are launched. There’s also footage of the Hai Kun diving to depths where sunlight doesn’t reach, indicating a depth of more than 50m.
