Conflict continues in the Middle East after the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran this past weekend. Iran has since responded with air strikes in several areas in the region. Reports say Iran launched ballistic missiles and suicide drones to bomb a radar station in northern Qatar [CUT-tur], which hosts a Pave Paws long-range early warning radar system. Taiwan uses the same radar system at the Leshan Radar Station, which has a detection range that covers almost all of East Asia. Military experts say Taiwan should learn from the attack on Qatar, and boost the defensive systems around the Leshan site. Let’s hear from an expert.
Chi Tung-yun
Military expert
Taiwan should learn from the situation in Qatar, and enhance the defensive systems in the surrounds of the Leshan radar site. That includes anti-drone systems, the NASAMS, or National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, as well as the 35mm rapid-fire cannons. All counter-drone and air-defense measures should be reinforced.
The Leshan radar site is located in the mountains of Hsinchu, at an altitude of 2,620m. It has a detection range of 4,000km and can track tactical ballistic missiles and aircraft targets, while providing real-time battlefield information. As a crucial part of Taiwan’s national defense, the site was inspected in recent years by former President Tsai Ing-wen. Now, the question is whether to strengthen its protection and how.
