As prices continue to rise, it’s becoming more challenging to afford a meal out. Even a simple meal easily costs more than NT$100 these days. But in New Taipei’s Zhonghe District, one 40-year-old shop is bucking the trend by selling their traditional thick meat soup for a pittance. One bowl served with fried noodles costs less than NT$100, and the staff even go around offering free refills.
Plump chunks of meat, tender and a little sweet, roll around in a thick soup base festooned with ribbons of egg. Its refreshing taste stands out from other viscous soups like it.
The staff occasionally walk around to all the tables, offering free soup refills for everyone dining in. This 40-year-old shop in New Taipei is a local favorite for residents of Zhonghe District.

For a glistening, oily plate of fried noodles with braised pork like the one I have here, plus a bowl of soup, it’ll set you back less than NT$100.
For a meal that’s delicious as well as filling, look no further than this set. The al dente noodles are drizzled with pork gravy and a touch of garlic paste for flavor. If you’re not feeling noodles, they also have braised pork rice with fish floss and sausage. The chef’s dedication to their craft ensures that the shop stays packed, even on weekdays.

Ten years ago, it was just a roadside stall in the alley. It was delicious and cheap, even then. A bowl of soup and a bowl of noodles for NT$50 flat. But now prices for everything have gone up. That would be impossible.
Even though prices have risen a little, at a time when everything is getting more expensive, it’s still rare to find such generous portions of delicious food for under NT$100.
