The Formosan landlocked salmon has overcome the threat of extinction thanks in large part to a breeding center at Wuling Farm. This ecological center is divided into three zones and maintains a salmon population of around 10,000. The facility is not open to the public, but FTV go you on an exclusive tour to see how it operates.
Covered in black spots and swimming around the tank, these are Formosan landlocked salmon, an endangered species endemic to Taiwan. This ecological center at the Wuling Farm has played a crucial role in helping the species recover, raising the fish from egg to adult every year starting in November.
Liao Lin-yen
Ecology center director
We raise breeding fish and salmon that are over two years old here. Each tank here has over two tons of water and larger fish survive better here. Behind are areas B and C, which have smaller fish and fertilized eggs.
The facility is split into three areas, each one caring for different sizes of fish. But one fish here stands out for its unique light-colored scaling. This is an albino Formosan salmon.
Chang Chiao-ying
Ecology center researcher
Albinism is actually a sign of reduced genetic diversity, which is the result of inbreeding. To prevent this genetic reduction, we catch wild fish in the upstream part of the Qijiawan River and pair them with fish from the breeding tank.
The center maintains a population of over 10,000 Formosan landlocked salmon, 2,000 of which are released into the wild, while 8,000 are kept for conservation and research. Through breeding and conservation efforts, the center has ensured this endemic fish species will not go extinct.
