A group of Taiwanese high-school students has created a non-profit providing online tutoring for an orphanage in Malaysia. They''ve also handcrafted jewelry to sell to raise funds for the orphanage. Formosa News reporter Stephany Yang sat down with the students to find out more about their initiative.
The students greet the children at the Trinity Community Children''s Home via a Zoom call. The Trinity Community Children Home is a sanctuary for orphaned and neglected children. Seeing their need for help, four students at Kang Chiao International School launched an online learning platform to teach children aged 11 to 16 English and various subjects such as social science, Chinese, science, and math.

Bees Without Wings
We started our project around last November. This was because during COVID time we saw a lot of news about a lot of Southeast Asian kids, especially disadvantaged kids, did not have the proper opportunities to go to school and such.

I am a tutoring a child from India. His name is Raymond. He is now 13 years old. He is also a very scientific person who really loves math and science. When I taught him, I was surprised by his passion for learning.
The non-profit called Bees Without Wings was created by four seniors at Kang Chiao International School. Not only do they provide online tutoring and mentoring for an orphanage in Malaysia, they also handcraft jewelry based on traditional Taiwanese elements. The jewelry is handmade using 14-karat gold-plated materials and natural gemstones produced by Taiwanese companies. The jewelry will be sold to raise money for the orphanage.

Our non-profit organization''s name is called Bees Without Wings. The name is inspired by how bees are very hardworking and a really collective insect and species. Me and Shayna came up with the name during a random math class. We described the children as the bees who don''t have wings. We hope that we are the ones that could provide them or give them wings so they can fly around freely and achieve their goals and dreams.

I am the treasurer, I count?the money and the profit of our jewelry that we want to donate to the TCC Home. I also design the logo and banners on our websites.
The students said founding a non-profit takes a lot of hard work, especially finding organizations to partner with.

This was actually really hard to do because we at first we contacted a bunch of organizations such as in the Philippines or Thailand. Alot of these we started to have a connection going back and forth, but suddenly for some reason they just disappeared. So we had to keep starting from zero again. We''d reach a point and then suddenly we''d have to go back. That''s why we are appreciative of the people at the TCC Home for being patient with us.

With the internet facilities, we are connected very closely. They are a great help to us during the time that they have the time. I believe that with their heart for the underprivileged, they will be able to still help them. We need volunteers such as tutors. One of the major areas we really need help is the financial help because of the pandemic things all slowed down. Donors slowed down.
The students started tutoring the children from Malaysia in November, and have already made different sets of jewelry that are being sold on their website. They hope that through the non-profit, they can establish meaningful relationships with children and continue to create greater awareness in Taiwan about other Southeast Asian countries.
