Taiwan will face off against Australia in its first game in the World Baseball Classic at 11:00 on Thursday morning in Tokyo. The starting pitcher for Team Taiwan will be Hsu Jo-hsi the team’s most seasoned and best pitcher. At a press conference, team captain Chen Chieh-hsien spoke about a special hand gesture that demonstrates the team’s unity under the pressure of the competition. Let’s hear from him.
Chen Chieh-hsien
Team Taiwan Captain
The gesture symbolizes grabbing our teammate’s wrist. It’s as if we were holding hands, with our hearts connected. Taiwan is a small island, we have a small population. So it’s not easy to compete against great players from all over the world. This gesture can unite us all as one through the competition.
Tseng Hao-chu
Team Taiwan Head Coach
The first game is decisive. It’s very important. You have to win to bring up morale in the team. We hope all the players can enjoy the competition.
Hsu Jo-hsi
Team Taiwan Pitcher
I think I’m pretty much ready, thanks to the practice games and our training. We’ll do our best to bag the win in the first game.
Since the competition will follow Major League Baseball rules, there are special restrictions on pitchers. In the preliminary rounds, pitchers are only allowed to throw a maximum of 65 pitches, and once they hit their 50th pitch, they must take a four-day break from playing. Since Taiwan will be playing four days in a row, that means they will have to carefully consider how to dispatch Hsu. It’s likely that he’ll pitch for about four innings on Thursday, but the strategy following that remains unknown, as Team Taiwan will have to prepare two more starters in place of Hsu when he is forced to rest.
