The first-ever direct ferry service between Taiwan’s Keelung City and Okinawa’s Ishigaki Island launched its maiden voyage today. The new ferry, called Yaima Maru, departs from Keelung port and takes only 7 to 9 hours to reach Japan.

The operator’s main selling point is that the ferry departs at night, so passengers can sleep on board and arrive early the next morning. It has a capacity of 545 passengers, while the cargo hold can accommodate 70 cars and approximately 90 40-foot containers. Before June 29, there will be one round trip per week and during the off-season, promotional tickets are as low as NT$2,000 per person. During the peak tourist season in July and August, there will be additional voyages, with two round trips per week.
