And here’s a success story of international cooperation in medicine between Taiwan and it’s Pacific ally, Palau. Last year, 58-year-old Ms. Mildred from Palau came to Taiwan to seek treatment for advanced liver cirrhosis. A medical team at MacKay Memorial Hospital then conducted an assessment of her condition and her son’s to then perform a successful liver transplant from a living donor in 12 hours. It is the first case of its kind involving a referral from Palau to Taiwan. Let’s hear more.

Ms. Mildred
Palauan patient
I just wanted to say, thank you so much for the Mackay medical team for taking care of me. Thank you very much.

The surface of her liver was uneven and nodular and she had fluid accumulation in the abdomen. There’s also the spleen, which has blood flowing toward the liver, and when resistance increases, it enlarges. Some people with liver cirrhosis may develop myocardial disease. Their skin may appear jaundiced, and kidney function may also be impaired. With living-donor liver transplants, the main challenges are bleeding and how to preserve all the necessary blood vessels and bile ducts, and then properly connect each part. Locally, liver function indices can still be drawn and are sent to me through the International Medical Center. If the values look good, the original plan of coming to Taiwan every three months to get medication can be maintained.

Since the patient is returning to her home country, the international medical team on her case will continue to monitor her condition across the ocean. This breakthrough for medical diplomacy once again proves that Taiwan can help is not just a slogan.
