Many people in Taiwan enjoy shrimp fishing, with businesses around the nation providing pools stocked with shrimp. One business in Tainan has taken it a step further, stocking its pools with lobsters and crabs to offer customers the chance to catch all kinds of delicious shellfish.

A man in a navy T-shirt pulls up on his taught fishing rod and reaches down to grab an enormous king crab.

This business in Tainan’s Rende District takes Taiwan’s shrimp fishing culture to a whole new level. Every week it stocks its pool with Mexican lobsters, yellow crabs, and king crabs, giving people the chance to catch all kinds of delicious shellfish.

- It’s not that hard. Catching king crabs is fun. It’s very exciting. You don’t know who will catch it.

- About two hours.
- How many did you catch in two hours?
- I caught six, and they put in more.
- Is it worth it?
- Yeah, it’s worth it!

It costs over NT$1,000 an hour to fish for lobsters and crabs here, but the staff adds more lobsters every half hour. Depending on the amount of people, they’ll even add king crabs. It’s only been open for three months, but already the place is very popular.

The market price for 3kg is over NT$10,000. If you catch it, you can take it home or sell it back to our company. We’re the only place like this in southern Taiwan. There are lots of shrimp fishing places, but we do it differently.

There are somewhere between 400 and 500 shrimp fishing spots across Taiwan, showing this is an established pastime that many people enjoy. To differentiate itself, this place in Tainan has quickly gained a following for offering lobsters and even king crabs.
