A retired official of the Executive Yuan was indicted for allegedly spying for China. He was allegedly recruited by Cheng Ming-chia, a Taiwanese businessman based in Guangzhou, China. Cheng began working for an organization affiliated with China’s United Front Work Department in 2016, in order to protect his business interest.

Cheng allegedly recruited Hu Peng-nian, the former head of public relations for the Executive Yuan. Under Cheng’s direction, Hu, who went on to teach in China, was assigned to recruit political figures as well as active and retired military personnel. Prosecutors have indicted the two and had them held incommunicado for serious breaches of national security laws. The Taiwan High Prosecutors’ Office is seeking a ten-year sentence at minimum for Cheng, the businessman; and left Hu’s ruling to the court’s discretion, since he was more compliant and expressed remorse during investigation.
