Can a couple of coins buy anything worthwhile these days? One hidden shop in Kaohsiung sells zongzi stuffed with pork and peanuts for just NT$25, making it one of the most affordable snacks around. With no sign and tucked away among residential homes, the shop has steadfastly served locals with its traditional flavors for over 40 years.

The smell of hot, steaming zongzi fills the air. Wrapped in a bamboo leaf, the sticky rice dumpling is packed with peanuts and pork belly. It’s just three coins for one.

It’s NT$25, very affordable. Compared with most prices these days, this zongzi is really cheap.

There’s lots of filling. It’s really a good deal.

These zongzi are prepared fresh daily, and customers tend to buy many at once. This shop is tucked away next to a main road in Kaohsiung’s Daliao District. The owners run it out of their home, with no sign to advertise. Relying on traditional flavors and affordable prices, they have steadfastly served the local community for over 40 years.

We’ve been selling these since before the road opened. Before, they were NT$15 to NT$20. Now they’re NT$25. We’ve been charging NT$25 for about two years now. It’s low profit, but high volume.

We get up and start selling them past 4 a.m. People start coming around then.

Every morning, she goes to the market to buy ingredients and comes back to soak peanuts and wash bamboo leaves, taking care with every step. As inflation continues to push prices up, these affordable, delicious zongzi are a delight.
