US President Donald Trump says he is hoping to postpone a meeting with Chinese Leader Xi Jinping, which was originally scheduled for later this month. Trump says he aims to delay the meeting “by a month or so.” In Taiwan, the Mainland Affairs Council says it is likely that Taiwan will be one of the topics of discussion when the two leaders meet. Let’s hear more.
Donald Trump
US President
But we’re speaking to China. I’d love to, but because of the war, I want to be here. I have to be here, I feel. And so we’ve requested that we delay it a month or so. I’m looking forward to meeting with him. We have a really good relationship, but because of the war… there’s no tricks to it either. It’s just, it’s not like “Oh gee! I’m waiting…” It’s very simple.
Shen Yu-chung
Mainland Affairs Council
We believe that the Taiwan Strait will be brought up, the Taiwan issue and the arms sales. There’s nothing we can do to influence the meeting, or to change anything about what the US and China will discuss during the meeting. But we must maintain a clear position and demonstrate the world our unwavering commitment to our national defense, our determination to defend our national sovereignty and our resolve to enhance our self-defense capabilities.
There are concerns that the conflict in the Middle East and the postponement of the Trump-Xi summit could cause delays to US arm sales to Taiwan. The Ministry of National Defense says that no delays have been reported so far. Meanwhile, former US Pacific Air Forces Airman Josh Hu says the US government has made it clear that the date of the meeting will not affect any future arms sales to Taiwan. That includes the Patriot missiles, which should be delivered as scheduled.
