A convenience store clerk was able to stop a scam with quick thinking in Taichung’s Tanzi District. The victim was a man from the Philippines, who was lured into an online dating scam. The scammer had claimed that she was going to inherit a fortune, but needed to pay a processing fee of NT$200,000. That’s when she instructed the man to buy NT$200,000 in Apple gift cards. Fortunately, the operation came to a quick end when police intervened at the convenience store.
Chen Yu-cheng
Police officer
After arriving at the scene, we found that he could only speak English. I spoke in English throughout, patiently explaining the scam and pointing out the suspicious elements. In the end, we managed to prevent the fake dating scam from succeeding.
The man had gotten in contact with the scammer online. She had claimed that her parents had left her an inheritance of 5 million dollars in the US, and that she needed to pay a NT$200,000 processing fee to access it. She supposedly then contacted a lawyer friend who advised the two to transfer the money via purchasing Apple gift cards. Fortunately, the convenience store clerk called the police, and the officer was able to talk the victim out of losing NT$200,000 to a scam.
