The bluefin tuna fishing season is about to kick off once again this April, and the Fisheries Agency has got good news for fishers. It’s raised the fishing quota significantly, allowing fishers to catch a total of 2,900 tons of the fish throughout the season. That’s an increase of 700 tons from last year.

The announcement has excited fishers and restaurateurs. For fishers, that means they can sell more, and for restaurateurs, that means more diners can be served. The Fisheries Agency is encouraging fishers to return to port as soon as possible after catching the fish, and to perform gill removal out at sea so that the fish arrives fresh. That is so that when it goes up for auction, the quality can be better in general. Trading volume at Donggang Fish Market, one of Taiwan’s top tuna hotspots, is expected to reach a new high this year.
