The Taiwan stock market soared on the first trading day after the Labor Day long weekend. At one point, the Taiex soared by 1,800 points, but ultimately closed up 1,778 at 40,705. Several new record figures were set, including intraday index, closing index and largest single-day gain. The rally was driven by gains in US stocks, with heavyweight stocks leading the Taiex. Among them, TSMC surged by more than 6% to close up at NT$2,775. Meanwhile, MediaTek and ASE closed limit-up. Let’s hear from an analyst.

Taiwan shares still have very solid fundamentals. Last month, the AI capital expenditure of the four major US cloud service providers increased from over US$600 billion to more than US$700 billion. This means real AI-related orders for Taiwan remain very strong. The Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics said that Taiwan’s GDP growth for the first quarter was 13.69%, marking a 39-year high. TSMC’s compound annual growth rate was originally 45%, but has now risen to between 55% and 59%, which is a significant increase, covering the period from 2024 to 2029. This indicates continuously improving future profitability. TSMC also has very high order visibility.
Taiwan’s stock market has been booming with the return of retail investors. The number of fractional-share investors in TSMC has reached 2.01 million. Experts note that long-term fundamentals remain solid and AI continues to be the main trend. However, as of last week’s close, the price deviation rate had already reached 13%, meaning there may be profit-taking pressure and increased volatility. Investors are advised to pay close attention to chip distribution and foreign investor movements.
