Taiwan’s low birthrate and population decline continue to capture headlines. Taiwan has recorded 27 months in a row of negative population growth, according to household registration data from the Ministry of the Interior. The total population in March was 100,000 people lower than the same month last year, and low births are a key part of the problem. Less than 9,000 babies were born during the month, a yearly decrease of 6.28%.

And the birth rate is expected to continue falling, amid a decline in marriages between young people and increasing economic and lifestyle pressure. The National Development Council is Expected to release a new population projection this coming August. The report will use an “ultra-low fertility” model, which predicts that Taiwan’s population would halve by 2065, leaving Taiwan with less than 12 million inhabitants.
